Rajinikanth Pens Autobiography During ‘Coolie’ Shoot, Reveals Director Lokesh Kanagaraj

Chennai, India, July 25, 2025 — Tamil cinema icon Rajinikanth is not only captivating audiences on the sets of his upcoming action thriller *Coolie* but is also quietly crafting a deeply personal project: his autobiography. In a recent interview, acclaimed director Lokesh Kanagaraj, who is helming Coolie, shared that the superstar has been diligently writing his life story during breaks in the film’s shooting schedules.

Kanagaraj revealed, “In the last two schedules, Rajinikanth sir was busy writing his autobiography. He used to write every day.” The director, known for blockbusters like Vikram and Leo, described how he would check in with the actor daily, asking, “What episode are you in? What phase are you writing about?” Rajinikanth would respond by sharing poignant details from his life, such as events from his 42nd year or other significant moments, offering Kanagaraj a rare glimpse into the superstar’s journey. “He shared stories with me that he hasn’t told anyone else,” Kanagaraj said, calling the experience “deeply moving” and a privilege that will remain close to his heart.

Rajinikanth, often referred to as “Thalaivar” (leader) by his legion of fans, is a cultural phenomenon whose rise from humble beginnings to global stardom is the stuff of legend. Born Shivaji Rao Gaikwad, the 73-year-old actor started his career as a bus conductor before becoming one of India’s most revered cinematic figures. His autobiography is expected to delve into the challenges and triumphs that have shaped his extraordinary life, resonating with millions who see him as a symbol of perseverance and humility.

Kanagaraj emphasized the emotional weight of Rajinikanth’s untold stories, noting, “One common factor that connects not just me but everybody in Tamil Nadu to him is all the hurdles he has overcome.” While no official confirmation has been made regarding the autobiography’s release or format, speculation is rife among fans that it could take the form of a book or even a podcast, offering an intimate look at the superstar’s life.

Meanwhile, Coolie, Rajinikanth’s 171st film, is generating significant buzz as one of the most ambitious Tamil films to date. Directed by Kanagaraj and produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures, the action thriller revolves around gold smuggling and features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Nagarjuna, Sathyaraj, Aamir Khan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and Shruti Haasan. The film marks the reunion of Rajinikanth and Sathyaraj after nearly four decades, their last collaboration being the 1986 hit Mr. Bharath. With music by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Girish Gangadharan, and editing by Philomin Raj, Coolie is set for a global release on August 14, 2025, in over 100 countries, making it one of the widest international releases for an Indian film.

The film has already made headlines for securing the highest overseas rights deal for a Tamil film, with Hamsini Entertainment spearheading its global distribution. Kanagaraj has clarified that Coolie is a standalone project, distinct from his Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), and has drawn comparisons to Mani Ratnam’s 1991 classic Thalapathi, with Rajinikanth himself noting similarities after viewing the film in the dubbing studio.

As anticipation builds for both Coolie and Rajinikanth’s autobiography, fans worldwide are eager to witness the superstar’s on-screen charisma and to read the untold chapters of his remarkable life. For now, Rajinikanth continues to balance his cinematic legacy with a reflective journey into his past, proving once again why he remains an enduring icon of Indian cinema.
